Linda Edna Cardellini was born in Redwood City, California, to Lorraine (Hernan) and Wayne David Cardellini an entrepreneur. She is of Italian (from her maternal grandfather), Irish (from her mother), German, English as well as Scottish descent. Linda was the youngest child of four children in San Francisco Bay, California. In her tenth year, she began to be attracted to acting after performing in a play at school. She studied at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama and made her debut on the British TV show Just William (2010). Cinderella was her first big performance following her appearance in the role of the character Lady Rose MacClare, in Downton Abbey's period drama (2012-2015). James was later cast as the Countess Natasha Rostova, in the version on television of War & Peace, in 2016, and was in several movies. They include the action film Baby Driver (2017) and the period dramas Darkest Hour (2017) and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018 and 2021) and musicals Mamma Mia! We Go Again 2018 and Yesterday (2019). Then, in 2022 her character as Pamela Anderson was recognized with the Golden Globe nomination and a Primetime Emmy Award.
