Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder that was rooted in the word association when she was a teenager. Ford started acting in her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure the position on her 4th application. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in 1991and appeared on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
